National Accreditation

Did you know that My Family Birth Center is Utah's only nationally accredited birth center and has been accredited since 2020? Let’s take a look at what that means exactly and how it can benefit our patients.

Accreditation Process

The Commision for the Accreditation of Birth Centers (CABC) uses the standards set by the American Association of Birth Centers to determine if a freestanding birth center meets the requirements for national accreditation.

Birth centers that have gone through the accreditation process show a commitment to providing quality care and staying updated on best maternity practices.

To become accredited, the birth center must first contact the CABC with a detailed self-evaluation report. The CABC will then send someone to the birth center for a two-day site visit. During the site visit, they will be examining:

  •  A comprehensive review of clinical and administrative policies and procedures
  • Evaluation for good business practices to ensure the success of the birth center
  • Confirmation of correct credentials and certifications among birth center personnel
  • Go over criteria of risk assessment and transfer procedures
  • Analysis of risk management and implementation of Continuous Quality Improvement programs
  • Thorough chart reviews
  • Examination of required clinical outcome statistics
  • Diligent inspection of the facility
  • Birth center staff interviews

The reports from the site visit and the self-evaluation will then be sent to review panelists who will make the final decision in accreditation.

After a birth center is accredited, the CABC works to continue educating birth centers on the importance of compliance to evidence-based national standards. Their goal is to help birth centers aim for the highest level of quality in the care and services provided.

Benefits

Patients can benefit greatly by receiving care from a nationally accredited birth center. The CABC seal of accreditation can be seen as an added layer of security to prospective patients.

You can trust the processes and procedures set in place by the midwives because they have been thoroughly examined and scrutinized by the CABC. By choosing a nationally accredited birth center, you have one less thing to worry about.

Birth centers can continue to feel confident about their quality of work within the facility. The CABC can provide ongoing support to birth centers to help with their bottom line, insurance negotiations, and Continuous Quality Improvement programs to keep the birth center running smoothly.

Takeaway

You can be assured that when a birth center is accredited through the CABC that they have been through a rigorous and detailed process to ensure the safety and comfort of their patients and will continue to be educated in maternal and fetal best practices.

The CABC ensures birth centers are held to the highest standards, and by becoming accredited, the patients can feel confident in their decision to receive quality care outside of a hospital.
